Tables Of Content
WHAT IS TABLES OF CONTENT?
Inquiring minds want to know what is “Tables Of Content”
Well…to be specific, it’s a 3 Hour Hip Hop Radio Show (formerly 2 hours) on 91.3 WYSO located in Yellow Springs, Ohio. Spearheaded by the honorable and very capable 3J The DJ from “The Land Of Funk” Dayton, Ohio. With nearly 10 years of being on the air, 3J’s mission statement has been to make Classic, Golden Age, Old & New School Hip Hop Lovers fall in love with radio again.
As a youngster, 3J lived on Edgemont Ave. which was literally right down the street from 107.7 WDAO FM / WAVI 1210 AM. 3J stated that Dayton had the music charts locked, sewed and hemmed for quite a while. As the first station in the region with an R&B format, he was exposed to more than the music that was brought in the house by his parents. Dayton Funk bands such as The Ohio Players, Zapp and Roger Troutman, Sun, Lakeside, Heatwave, Faze-O, Slave and so many others.
In the very end of the 70’s, 3J heard Rap Music from local DJ parties he was privileged to attend and tapes that were brought back from traveling friends. Several R&B songs had a “rap-style cadence” at the time. George Duke’s “Reach For It” and “Dukey Stick” along with Jimmy Castor's "Hallucinations” hinted around to what was to become “rapping”.
Then came Fatback Band with King Tim III , Sugarhill Gang’s Rapper’s Delight, Kurtis Blow’s Christmas Rappin’ and the thought provoking Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five’s The Message. Listening around I further understood that songs like those didn’t see the playlists of radio DJ’s until night time.
The early 80’s ushered in variation in programming on urban radio…especially late evenings. Realizing the popularity of rap music, program directors started playing these records during the day. During the time when radio was an essential part of the cultural fiber of music, it meant so much to the culture that we were finally being recognized and somewhat respected.
3J would like to continue the feeling we once had for the importance of radio and community. And hopefully, more people will tune in and support
